Synonyms: Turing evaluation, AI Turing Test, machine intelligence test, human-like AI test

The Turing Test is a foundational concept in artificial intelligence because it provides a practical way to evaluate a machine's ability to mimic human intelligence. It challenges AI developers to create systems that can engage in natural, human-like conversations.
In the Turing Test, a human evaluator interacts with both a machine and a human without knowing which is which. If the evaluator cannot reliably tell the machine from the human, the machine is said to have passed the test.
Chatbots and virtual assistants are often tested using variations of the Turing Test to assess their conversational abilities. For example, AI programs like ELIZA and more advanced systems like GPT-based chatbots have been evaluated to see if they can convincingly simulate human conversation.
